In Canada, we're extremely lucky because our country is third only to Brazil and Russia in annual renewable water resources (
see). But in many countries around the world, water is extremely scarce. One third of the world's population s currently facing problems water scarcity and poor drinking water quality. And even in many places in Canada water shortages are a becoming big problem: water levels are going down which reduces the effectiveness of hydro electric plants, effects shipping routes and threatens cities water supplies. Finally, UNESCO had reported that by 2010, world water shortages will be become a major problem (
see).
But if everyone makes an effort, we can avoid a crisis. Here are some really easy ways everyone can save water in the bathroom:
- Turn the tap off while you're brushing your teeth
- Don't dispose of garbage that could go in a waste bin (such as tissues and cigarette) in the toilet
- Shorten the amount of time you're in the shower or if you prefer baths, don't fill the bathtub up as high
- If you're renovating, install a low flow shower head and a low flush toilet model
The future may look bleak, but don't forgot that together we drastically reduced levels of
CFCs in our atmosphere which threatened to destroy our
ozone layer.
